Society Information

National Stroke Association (NSA) was formed in 1984 to fill a void as the only national non-profit health care organization focusing 100 percent of its resources and attention on stroke. In its brief history, NSA has become a leading national resource on stroke and the driving force behind efforts to improve stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Based in Englewood, Colorado, NSA sustains itself through individual donations, memberships and grants.

Japan Stroke Society (JStS) is the only stroke-related professional society in Japan. The JStS currently has more than 5,000 members, including neurologists, internists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists and others. Because stroke is the number one cause of death in Japan, the study of stroke is of great interest to physicians, researchers, and co-medicals.

Crest Trial

Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST)

This study of 1,565 patients describes the largest endovascular training program ever mounted prior to a randomized trial of surgery vs. stenting for vascular disease, in this instance, carotid artery disease. Adequate training for stent performers prior to RCTs remains controversial. The credentialing process and results of the lead-in phase for the CREST trial are presented, providing one model for a comprehensive credentialing process.
